Washing the Scarves from Derry Agricultural Fair 2023

Before and After – Washing greatly changes the appearance and feel of textiles. The wool “blooms” and becomes much softer and fluffier. This process also strengthens the fabric as the wool begins to full (felt) and interlock.

These scarves were woven at the Derry Township Agricultural Fair for our Sheep to Scarf demo. Since they were woven with raw (unwashed) fleece, the difference is even more noticeable. The extra lanolin, dirt, and vegetable mater is washed out, changing the yarn from beige to white.

Derry Agricultural Fair 2023

We wove two scarves on the same loom this year at the Derry Agricultural Fair on July 12, 2023, and auctioned them. Thank you to everyone who participated and stopped by!
